I’ve been thinking recently about some of the books that I’ve read in the past. One book that has important life lessons is ‘Of Mice and Men’. I read this a long time ago, but its one of those classic books that i won’t ever forget.
‘Of Mice and Men’ is bleak and melancholic. It will make you cry. But, i think that it displays an important lesson about dreaming and friendships. Yep, dreams don’t come true in ‘Of Mice and Men’, but Steinbeck allows his characters to have ambition. George and Lenny dream of having a ranch. But, the unfortunate web of life gets in the way and things end of on a sore note. I’ve learned that even in the mist of hardship and pain, it’s still okay to have a dream.
George and Lennie have a beautiful friendship. There is an element of trust in there, but i think that Lennie’s disability means that George has so much to worry about. George is Lennie’s best-friend and his guardian. Responsibility is thrown upon George’s shoulders and ultimately he saves Lennie for the cruel world.
This novel may appear like it supports the idea of a hopeless world. But, if you look at it closely you will see that there are glimmers of hope and at the center of the novel is the friendship of Lennie and George, and the american dream.
