Book Review:The Perks Of Being a Wallflower

perks of being a wallflower

I hadn’t heard of Chbosky’s ‘The Perks of Being a Wallflower’ until the movie was released in cinemas sometime last year. The film looked good, and I liked the name. When I heard that it was a a novel, I decided that i wanted to read it.  About a month has passed since i read the book and it was not a disappointment. I will share with you guys why i love this book.

The protagonist of the story is a 15 year old boy, Charlie. He is a shy, introverted, but clever boy that gradually breaks out of his shell. As he befriends Sam and Patrick and others that belong to their friendship group,Charlie beings to enjoy his high school years.

My Opinion

I love that  this novel is so real. Charlie is not  a perfect character,  he still struggles with his demons even towards the end of the novel. But as a character, he progresses. He learns to enjoy just ‘being’;  he allows himself to feel ‘infinite’, and , most importantly, he stops being afraid. Charlie does not allow his problems to stop him from reaching out to others. He is a caring brother, and a loyal and honest friend. But his honesty does get him into a few problems. He also cries a lot ( see, its okay for boys to cry!)

Chbosky’s style of writing is  simple but sophisticated. He truly captures the voice of Charlie through the use of first person narrative, and he creates intimacy between us and his protagonist. I like that the book is  written as an epistle.

Charlie is such an endearing character and his friends are great.  Anyone, no matter your age or gender, can read this book.
